Brockton Health Officials Define Excessive Drinking, List Local Treatment Resources

BROCKTON — May 26, 2025 — Brockton health officials use community TV broadcast to detail alcohol misuse risks and local resources. Health Department Director Eno Mondizier and public health physician and epidemiologist Dr. Victor Sebastian presented a structured education segment on May 26, defining a standard U.S. drink — 12 ounces of beer, 8 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of distilled spirit — and setting the threshold for excessive drinking at more than four drinks per occasion for women and five for men. Sebastian said alcohol-related cancers cause approximately 20,000 deaths in the United States annually, warned that no amount of alcohol is safe during pregnancy, and said the evidence shows alcohol worsens rather than relieves depression. The officials directed residents to the High Point Treatment Center, BMC clinics, the Brockton Neighborhood Health Center, Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon, and a statewide helpline at 833-773-2445, and invited residents to call the Board of Health directly for referrals.
