Brockton COA Hosts Senior Picnic as Mayor Sullivan Marks Final Event in Office

BROCKTON — August 20, 2025 — Brockton's annual senior picnic doubles as a farewell for Mayor Sullivan and a showcase for a newly expanded Council on Aging. The event at the Mary Cruz Kennedy Council on Aging building on August 20 brought together hundreds of older adults, volunteers, and elected officials the day before World Senior Citizen Day. COA Director Janice announced that the center has welcomed more than 250 new members since returning to its building in March and unveiled a new brand and logo, with two new staff hires rounding out a period of rapid growth. Mayor Robert Sullivan, attending his final senior picnic before leaving office after three terms, confirmed the completion of a 5,000-square-foot addition to the building, funded entirely through federal American Rescue Plan Act dollars, and described personally lobbying Congressman Steve Lynch, U.S. Senator Ed Markey, and U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren to secure an additional $3 million for the Cosgrove Pool renovation. Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz presented funds to the COA from the county's Community Reinvestment Fund, drawn from money seized from drug dealers.
