Conservation Commission clears the way for a turf-field upgrade at Brockton's Snow Park soccer complex.

BROCKTON --

TOWN -- The Conservation Commission voted this week to advance a long-reviewed plan to install synthetic turf at the Snow Park soccer field on Center Street. At its Sept. 23 meeting, the commission first issued a certificate of compliance closing out the site's original 2009 order of conditions, which covered the soccer field's initial construction. It then took up a separate notice of intent for the turf project, after the city's wetlands consultant, Weston and Sampson, submitted a letter recommending an order of conditions be issued because performance standards for the site's wetland-adjacent areas had been met. Scott Ferria of Holmgren Engineering, representing the city, told the commission the latest design change adds a retaining wall around the existing parking area, roughly 2.5 to 4 feet high, to preserve flood storage on the property while raising the field itself about a foot so it stays playable year-round. The plan also includes an underdrain system and a filtration structure, described in the meeting as a "jellyfish" unit, meant to keep runoff from the field from reaching the adjacent wetland.

YOUTH LEAGUES -- The Brockton Baseball Association, which runs programs for players ages 4 to 18 out of the Mayor Bill Carpenter Baseball Complex, says on its website it is planning an Awards Night in October; an exact date had not been set as of this week.
