Finance panel OKs $2.3M fire truck purchase
Finance Committee · Meeting of September 21, 2026
Brockton Finance Committee backs $2.3 million fire truck bond, citing $1 million in locked-in savings. Fire Chief Brian Nardelli told councilors a truck that cost $631,000 in 2021 now runs about $1 million, driven by consolidation to three national manufacturers; the department locked pricing in October 2024 and will pay $2.214 million if it settles the bill outright by November 30. Interim CFO John Condon walked the committee through two stabilization fund transfers, $414,801 and $354,629, to cover a state revenue shortfall, leaving the fund near $200,000.
A separate $2,627,669 pension stabilization transfer covers a higher contributory retirement assessment after the system's executive director, Gina Markno, said a new valuation found the unfunded liability grew by about $26 million, mostly from school-side hiring. "I hope, makes you feel better," Markno told councilors, noting the city's appropriation came in $5 million below what she originally sought. Councilors postponed until October 19 a resolve asking the mayor to sue the state over new zoning requirements under Chapter 137 of the Acts of 2026.
