BROCKTON — The Brockton School Committee's Security, Safety and Transportation Subcommittee heard an update on bus fleet repairs and tightened private vendor rules ahead of an October 26 bid solicitation. Director of Transportation Kamal Peterson told members the district transports about 7,600 students, including 1,700 in special education, and that seven vehicles, including three vans with transmission problems, were out of service. New vendor contract terms will require GPS trackers, cameras, two-way radios and identification vests on the district's 77 private routes serving the Baker, Angelo and Raymond schools.
Member Sandra Centeio said she had "received a few complaints" about private vendor safety, while staff said two vendors were already pulled this year over a cracked windshield and an expired inspection sticker. Member Ana Oliver noted "transportation was a little bit difficult from September to now." The subcommittee's only votes, both 5-0, removed a safety item from its own agenda and adjourned the meeting.
