Brockton School Committee airs ethics complaint, votes on substitute pay
School Committee · Meeting of September 15, 2026
Brockton School Committee members air ethics complaints, clash publicly with mayor. Vice Chair Claudio Gomes and member Stephen Pina traded accusations in open session Tuesday over a complaint Pina filed accusing Gomes of contacting Enterprise reporter Jacob Posner to criticize him; the dispute widened into a confrontation with the mayor over a Cape Verde vacation and a Facebook comment Pina allegedly liked. Member Oliver called the past nine months "mentally, emotionally, physically draining." Away from the friction, the committee heard that the district's 2026 state review found it no longer needs DESE's intensive intervention, approved substitute-teacher pay topping $285 a day, accepted more than $2.2 million in grants, and postponed a vote naming Memorial Drive after the late Dr.
Claire M. Appling to October 6.
