Brockton Schools Plan Competitive Bid Process After Audit Finds 2,717 Amazon Orders

School Committee · Meeting of July 7, 2026

Brockton School Committee's account review panel heard that the district placed 2,717 Amazon orders totaling $1.1 million last year, and is now moving toward a competitive bid process to consolidate purchasing. Associate Principal Jen Morgan, working through a superintendent-license apprenticeship, told the subcommittee Tuesday that 11,993 line items across 1,600 purchase orders had been analyzed, with a first phase reducing 2,000 office-supply lines to a standardized menu of 61 items — covering $125,000 of the total — to be put out to bid quarterly. Subcommittee member Nelson Pina separately pressed administrators on a Verizon telecommunications bill he estimated at nearly $20,000 per month, saying a detailed written request he submitted June 29 had gone unanswered; district staff said a structured analysis, modeled on the Amazon review, is planned for a future session.

Pina also named former employee Jorge Vega as potentially still listed on the district's Verizon account, and flagged a $70,000 expenditure from a 466-page warrant packet that he said he could not attribute to a specific location or fund.
