Brockton School Committee Votes to Hire Outside Actuary on Pension Liability
School Committee · Meeting of July 7, 2026
Brockton School Committee votes to hire outside actuary to resolve disputed pension obligation costs. The committee voted unanimously 6-0 at its July 7 meeting to authorize the superintendent to contract with an independent actuary after a presentation showed four competing methodologies producing school-district cost allocations ranging from 32 percent to 63 percent of total city pension bond payments — with a projected steep increase arriving in 2029. The superintendent said the city had unilaterally applied a 37 percent Schedule 19 rate this fiscal year, a figure that had not been agreed upon during internal discussions.
"The math is not mathing," said one member, echoing broader skepticism about city-supplied figures. The committee also accepted two Ameresco donations totaling $30,000 in memory of late School Committee member Brett Gormley, deferred a vote on restoring a $150,000 community schools coordinator position until the program's director can present in person, and approved a 0.5 percent Early Education and Care rate increase for the Smart Start Extended Day program effective September 3. The district's CFO position remains vacant after the prior contractor's engagement ended June 30.
