Brockton School Committee Approves Policies, Waives Police Fee 4-1
School Committee · Meeting of September 3, 2026
Brockton schools open the year with $1.5 million in literacy grants and a fight over a $3 million deficit. The superintendent told the School Committee the district secured $1.1 million in PRISM One funding plus $476,000 in new PRISM Three middle-school grants, and distributed 6,500 backpacks this summer. Members clashed over hiring a second actuary after learning the city already retains one, KSM, with the chair arguing "it's not just the school, but it's predominantly a city issue," while member Rodriguez favored waiting on the district's own request for qualifications.
The non-net school spending account remains more than $3 million negative for fiscal 2026. The committee voted 4-1 to waive a $3,000 facilities fee for a Brockton Police community event, with member Pina dissenting, saying "I'm just concerned that this sets a bad precedent." School police staffing rose to 14 officers from six or seven a year ago.
