Finance panel backs schools' exit from DESE oversight
Finance Committee · Meeting of October 5, 2026
Brockton Finance Committee backs DESE review showing schools' growth, tables $1.6 million trash-barrel bond. Superintendent Dr. Priya Tahiliani told councilors the district sunset its 2020 memorandum of understanding with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in spring 2025 after a 127-page comprehensive review found strengths in curriculum, assessment and student support, with growth areas in parent engagement, grading consistency and financial record-keeping.
Councilors also approved a $33,000 transfer that funded summer jobs for 63 Brockton youths and roughly $34,500 in late police department invoices, but tabled the $1.6 million rubbish-barrel bond after Treasurer Martin Brophy's absence, and postponed hearings on Flock Safety license-plate-reader cameras and downtown YMCA-area zoning. "This work and this responsibility is too important and too sacred for us to not roll up our sleeves," Councilor Green said.
