School Finance Panel Confronts $5M in New Cuts
Brockton schools face $5 million in new cuts after a pension bond spike erased state aid gains.
School Committee · Meeting of May 12, 2026
Brockton schools face $5 million in new cuts after a pension bond spike erased state aid gains. The Finance Subcommittee heard that a 36 percent jump in the city's pension obligation bond cost, nearly $4 million instead of an expected $500,000, combined with Schedule 19 city chargebacks up 10.8 percent, forced reductions beyond 47 already-planned vacancies, eliminating roughly 144 positions across four unions with six confirmed layoffs in the teachers' union so far. Committee member Oliver said "I'm extremely angry, frustrated" and vowed to vote for the full $254 million request rather than accept layoffs.
Vice Chair Rodriguez pressed the city auditor on $4.3 million, $5.3 million and $5.6 million in Schedule 19 overcharges he said occurred in fiscal 2023 through 2025. No budget vote was taken; a reduction-in-force vote and a carryforward-tuition vote are set for Thursday, May 14, ahead of a state-mandated May 15 teacher-notice deadline.
