Brockton City Council Refers $555.9 Million FY26 Budget to Finance Committee

BROCKTON -- June 16, 2025, Brockton City Council introduces $555.9 million FY26 budget and votes 6-0 to authorize 10 new police cruisers. At a June 16 special meeting, the council referred the proposed $555,896,078 general fund budget, funded primarily by $315.9 million in state aid and a $186.2 million tax levy, to the Finance Committee for review, along with six enterprise fund budgets covering water, sewer, refuse, stormwater, parks and recreation, and parking. The single largest appropriation is net school spending at $251,570,700. The council also unanimously approved three mid-year fiscal year 2025 transfers, including $370,000 to cover a Medicare tax shortfall and $305,000 to fully fund the Law Department. Councilor Farwell moved to suspend the rules to act immediately on a $170,000 transfer from police personal services to capital vehicles, telling colleagues the purchase of the cruisers needed to "go forward" without delay; the council approved the transfer 6-0, with Farwell, Lally, Nicastro, Rodriguez, Texera, and Thompson voting in favor.
