Brockton School Committee Refers Six Oversight Items, Names Warrant Signatories

BROCKTON — January 20, 2026 — Brockton School Committee opens 2026 with armed-employee arrest disclosure and six subcommittee referrals. School Police Lieutenant Benaka told the committee at its January 20 meeting that a school department employee was arrested after a firearm was found on their person during a nightly check of the Raymond School parking lot; criminal charges are pending and the employee is on administrative leave. The committee, under new chair Mayor Moses Rodriguez, unanimously referred six oversight items — including athletic finances, district-affiliated nonprofit accounts, special education costs, transportation, the Shaw Center, and policy codification — to subcommittees at the request of member Steven Pina, who framed the moves as protecting the district from legal exposure. The committee also voted to designate Pina and Claudio Gomes to review and sign district warrants under a DocuSign pilot, and referred a food service contract expiring June 30, 2026 to the bid review subcommittee. Superintendent Dr. Traci Tahiliani presented mid-year DIBELS data showing the share of third graders performing at or above literacy benchmark rising from 32 percent to 45 percent year over year.
